About six months ago Fit Bodies, Inc. began booking positions at two hotels in Puerto Vallarta. At the time they were only holes in the ground. This is Secrets Vallarta Bay and Now Amber Puerto Vallarta. I knew once the properties opened I had to manage a way to see them firsthand and experience Puerto Vallarta. To see the waters in the historical Mexican town as they sit alongside mountain edges, for the sake of being able to tell others about it is an occupational dream come true! Promising to more than adequately photograph, report, ask questions and teach yoga, of course, I waited for the best time. The perfect opportunity arises…DCAC Fitness Convention in Houston, Texas. From the convention, we departed Houston.

Less than three hours later we arrived to Now Amber and Secrets Vallarta Bay after 15 minutes drive with Amstar from the PVR airport. As we pull up the hotels’ driveway we see the tall golden brick front of Now Amber.

The two resorts, Secrets Vallarta Bay and Now Amber are conjoined in two places. The large white sail stretches across two entrances. The sail signifies the sailing culture and history of Puerto Vallarta. On the left side of the sail is Secrets Vallarta Bay lobby and to the right is Now Amber. Colors and decorations offer variety in the two lobbies. Similarities include comfortable sitting areas to enjoy the Rendezvous bar at Secrets or Moments, is the lobby bar at Now Amber.

Both are in a most tranquil setting, enjoying the sunset and fresh air from the gorgeous lobby locations. The beach and beachside restaurants are nicely placed to divide the two resorts in a casual way. Between the resorts next to the lifeguard tower is the perfect area for yoga class. This is where my daily yoga class was held in the mornings, offered to guests at Now Amber and Secrets Vallarta Bay. Attendance was between 8-14 each day and even though the Sugar Reef bar staff played nice yoga music, my favorite music is the gentle sounds of ocean current moving in and out from the shore.

There is nothing better than mornings spent teaching yoga at resorts. I wake up about sunrise, which was not incredibly early for Puerto Vallarta in April. Twenty minutes later I’m on my mat looking into the ocean, breathing, moving from pose to pose. At nine o’clock students showed for class, we move to my favorite beach area between the two resorts. After teaching for an hour, head onto breakfast at Market Café with plenty of fresh variety and wonderful service to enjoy inside or outside.
The final day of teaching, minutes before we began class, I spotted four dolphins leaping through the waters just beyond the resort’s swim line. Further in the distance a very large cruise ship is coasting into port toward a northern shore. Quite the series of sights and sounds I will forever remember.

Looking forward to being back in Puerto Vallarta is easy. From the wonderful students attending class everyday to townspeople and merchants to the meticulous resort staff, the people of Puerto Vallarta are diverse and welcoming. The cultural heritage of Puerto Vallarta holds Mexican culture of artistic delight. Sculptures visually jump out from the boardwalk and shops from leather goods, art, shoes and attire, tequila and chocolate tastings are throughout. Near the Secrets and Now hotel, right down the street next to Arbol del Yoga is “Dudes & Bettys Store” with hot swim attire for men and women. The staff is incredibly sweet so I must recommend you visit for a little shopping. Just a 5 minute walk north of the hotel’s driveway.

Many tourists in tropical locations check out adventure escapades like zip-lining canopy tours, some sort of water excursion, or venture into the sea depths to explore. On the first day after arriving to Now Amber Puerto Vallarta, Suzelle and I hop in the car with Amstar after teaching and breakfast to head Grand Palladium Vallarta. The resort, 50 minutes from Now and Secrets, is very impressive with wonderful aspects to share.

Located in Punta Mita, 45 minutes from the airport leads a scenic ride finally up a mountainside with breathtaking views of the Pacific and ending at Grand Palladium Vallarta’s open lobby. Visiting with Grand Palladium Vallarta is especially wonderful, as our program has spanned from other Grand Palladium locations in Riviera Maya and Lucea, Jamaica. This is a 5 Star all-inclusive resort. Palladium Vallarta has 422 rooms and soft white sand private beach. Also well known surfing location with lessons included. In addition to surfing, the resort has boogie-boarding, catamaran, kayaks, snorkel and wind surfing. At night, the disco is open late for adults. Even little ones age 1-3 have their own Baby Club from 9-5 and Palladium Mini Club is 9:30-11 for children age 4-12. Teenagers can enjoy video games and discotheque at the Junior Club. Entertainment after dinner is every night, offering stages of elaborate dancers and costumes.

Dining at Grand Palladium Vallarta for lunch had extensive buffet options with exceptionally healthy and fresh options plus crowd pleasers for everyone’s vacation delight. Try the gazpacho at El Bosque. Two buffet restaurant selections for lunch and four restaurants for evening dining from Mediterranean, Oriental, Mexican cuisine and a steak house. The service and outdoor breezes within dining options makes every breakfast, lunch and dinner a dining experience of gourmet food and exceptionally courteous service.

Lolo, the Entertainment Manager tours the resort with us regularly to meet staff and see the activities. We met the Fit Bodies guest instructor Vicki, who was vacationing with her two teenage sons. “The teaching schedule is 10 am yoga or pilates on beach under a cabana. 11am zumba pool side and 12 aqua. All the classes are well attended and all the guests are very nice and so appreciative! It’s a pleasure to teach here.”

On with the HUATULCO FLIGHT OPTIONS!

Okay, you Houston residents are in for a treat! Known as the “Gateway to Mexico”, IAH is a direct, 2.25 hour flight to Huatulco. Huatulco’s airport code is HUX. Awesome, except probably 98% of you reading this don’t live in Houston Here is valuable info and options for one stop flight options to cure your Huatulco crave!!
You’re looking at flying United or Continentals Airlines for this one, unless you are a Delta flight through Mexico City, but through Houston has wonderful options:

EWR New Jersey is less than 9 hours of travel to Huatulco. Not too bad. And my travel times include layover elapse.

ORD Chicago is less than 7 hours of travel to Huatulco. Better, better…

CVG Cincinnati is also less than 7 hours through Houston. Now we’re talking! I won’t dread that in December when I tour the new Secrets Property (yes, please keep your fingers crossed for me too)!! Columbus, OH and Cleveland are also a good airport for Sunday Huatulco travel.

Other nice options for Huatulco through Houston IAD are LGA Laguardia, also CLT Charlotte is pretty reasonable in terms of travel time. Also BOS Boston, MEM Memphis (less than 5 hours) and Nashville among so many others!

Travel time to Huatulco is less than 6 hours from TPA Tampa, IND Indianapolis, STL St. Louis, IAD Dulles, and BHM Birmingham.

Of course, let’s not forget all you yoga teachers and group fitness gurus flying from DEN Denver-less than 7 hours to and from HUX airport. PHX Phoenix, less than 7 (TUS < and RDU Raleigh is less than 7 hours travel time to Huatulco.

These flights all have at least three things in common. They are only 1 stop, less than 8 hours travel time (other than EWR) and all will take you to a wonderful, unforgettable vacation for you, your significant other or take the family. These flights are all based on travel January 29-February 5, 2012 and the flight prices across the board were pretty consistently between $570 and $670.

This is not a complete list but rather I want to entice thoughts of a new exotic destination for your next Fit Bodies, Inc. teaching vacation. You’ll also find Huatulco layovers with Delta in Mexico City and that may be a great option for some west coast residents coming from LAX, ATL, SEA, DTW.

So don’t be afraid to really consider a week or two of travel to Huatulco, Mexico!

This fall debuted Kid’s Fitness programming at Now Resorts, currently including Now Jade Riviera Cancun and Now Sapphire Riviera Cancun in Mexico. The fitness classes range from Kid’s Yoga, Mommy & Me Yoga, Daddy & Buddy Bootcamp and further vary based on the skills and teaching talents of the instructor currently booked there.

I had the privilege of teaching Kid’s Yoga at Now Jade the week of Nov 8 – Nov 13 during Fitness Magazine getaway week at Now Jade. Fit Bodies, Inc. very own Suzelle Snowden and Denise Cox helped to host the bootcamp, conducting the morning run and aqua class sessions. Other activities included a snorkeling trip and bike ride to Puerto Morales. Many fitness activities all while leaving plenty of time for guests to enjoy the great food, service, friends, family and laughter. Now Jade was a perfect resort to host the event due to their large, smooth beach and flawless entertainment staff.

Families came out for Kid’s Yoga at 11 A.M. Also the children signed into the Adventure Club came over for class, too. Children practiced taking big breaths of air and moved in and out of yoga poses imitating animals and shapes. The kid’s favorites included triangle pose, cat/cow stretch, downward facing dog, and reverse table pose, which we now know as “crab” pose! All the while their parents watched, photographed and videotaped in complete enjoyment in watching their children in a yoga class on vacation.

After staying at Now Jade for a week, I highly recommend it as a teaching vacation destination. It is a fun, energetic property with classy style. Nice restaurants with excellent food, wonderful beach, large rooms, lots of pool area and very clean. I will definitely return again!
